Furniture, AI, and lamps, oh my! New York Design Week is set to return from May 16 to May 23, and the itinerary is chock full of shows, exhibitions, and talks to attend. This year (the fair’s 35th anniversary) will include a design showcase from the platform WANTED, which discovers and elevates work from students and international independent designers. Shaping the National Design Collection Exhibition + Panel Discussion Cooper Hewitt’s latest exhibition features more than 150 objects that the design-focused museum has added to its permanent collection since 2017. At this panel, audiences will hear from curators about what defines design today and how institutional collections can reflect cultural values. This cross-disciplinary exhibition from the Parsons School of Design will include multiple installations exploring various themes, each will spring board off of the question, “How do you feel New York?” Soundscapes, videos, and photographs will immerse guests in a multi-sensory experience. Day(s) and times: May 20-22, 12-7 p.m. Location: 99 SCOTT STUDIOS, 99 Scott Ave, Brooklyn, 11237 Made in Italy NYC Designed by SEA in partnership with Pentagram, this two-day event will celebrate post-WWII Italian and American graphic design, delving into the artistic connection between the two countries between the 1950s and the 1980s. Guests can see original works from artists including Massimo Vignelli, Heinz Waibl, and Walter Ballmer—most of which have never been displayed outside of Italy. A limited-edition book on the topic by SEA is set to accompany the exhibition. Grounded by the concept of aṣẹ, “a powerful affirmation and philosophical belief held by the Yoruba people of West Africa, meaning ‘so will it be,’” the work is meant to tell a story of resilience and possibility. It features digital projections by London-based Afro-surrealist artist Vince Fraser and poetry by Ursula Rucker. Just a month ago, the company made its debut at the Salone Del Mobile in Milan. Now, the brand is unveiling an impressive partnership with Lukas Bentel, cofounder of the collective art group MSCHF. The result is a series of Jacquard woven tapestries, each inspired by Bentel’s youth in NYC. Each year, the arts organization Head Hi issues an open call for designers to submit their wackiest lamps—and without fail, the designers deliver. More than 300 submissions were received this year from around the globe. DESIGN DYSPHORIA This exhibition features work from a curated group of up-and-coming and established queer designers, aiming to examine the importance of queer creative spaces in the design world. It spans an array of media including furniture, glass lighting fixtures, textile artwork, and interactive design objects by majority women, nonbinary, and trans artists.
