Clifton Adams' excellent 1953 novel Whom Gods Destroy has a thug loser protagonist with plans to be a big shot. And two possible femmes fatales. Has a nasty edge to it and a stifling atmosphere of hopelessness. That's what noir fiction is all about. Here's my review.
