The sunny weather where I am in the UK this week has me feeling excited for some spring sewing.

I didn’t think I’d ever quote Charles Dickens on a sewing blog, but.. ‘It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade.’ Clothes have to be versatile in changing weather!

Of course, you can wear whatever you make in spring all year around – I love having a dress with lots of ease that’s breezy in the summer, that I can also pair with boots, wool tights, and a chunky jumper.

Spring sewing pattern ideas

I thought I’d share a few ideas of things I’ve made, or patterns I’d like to sew.

Sew Liberated ‘Hinterland Dress

This wonderful pattern is perfect for layering. It also comes with multiple options, and the instructions are really clear. I made a sleeveless top as a practice run for fitting the bodice, and plan to make a dress of it soon. The pattern is aimed at advanced beginners, and walks you through how to sew bust darts, bias facings, inseam pockets, button plackets, and inset sleeves.

Modern Sewing Company ‘Worker Trousers

These are a really good everyday pair of trousers. I’ve made some in a mid-weight corduroy that I had intended for gardening, but I liked them too much! I’m planning a heavier weight cotton twill pair next. They have the option of a button or zip fly, side pockets, patch pockets, flat felled seam, waistband & belt loops.

I’d recommend these William Gee metal zips for trousers.

Made My Wardrobe ‘Kezia Top

This looks like the ideal layering piece! Base layers are so useful, and the shape of this design is slightly more relaxed than some of the tighter-fitting long sleeved t-shirts. Your fabric should have a two-way stretch (e.g. jersey fabric). You could sew this using zig-zag stitch on a regular sewing machine, or create a more professional finish with an overlocker, if you have one. WG stocks various overlocker threads.

Merchant and Mills ‘Ellsworth Shirt

I haven’t made this shirt yet, but I’ve always found M&M’s patterns to be excellent, with lots of finishing details to make your project look professional. This oversized shirt with the front half-placket detail would be lovely worn with the Worker Trousers, I think!

You could use a lighter weight cotton, or add a bit of structure with a mid-weight fabric and interfacing.

Thread and Yarn ‘Bramble Skirt’

I’ve snuck one of my own patterns in here at the end! This skirt has an elasticated waistband, tiers, in-seam pockets and optional details like pin tucks. There’s a free YouTube tutorial walking you through how to make one, and you can also download the written instructions and pocket piece from my website (with the option to leave a little donation, if you like).

You can find various waistband elastics here at WG.

I hope you enjoyed these spring sewing ideas! Wishing you a happy spring and lots of sewing fun.
