Teaching Kids How to Wash Their Hands There is a lot of concern lately about preventing the spread of illness. One of the best ways to stay healthy and prevent illness is by using good hand washing technique. Tips for Teaching Hand Washing:1. Wash your own hands: Kids learn best by example. Wash your hands and have your child watch. Show him or her the proper technique. This also shows how important hand washing is.2. Talk to your child about when to wash his or her hands. Remind your child to wash hands before they eat and after they go to the bathroom. It may also be good to wash hands after coming home from school or other public places. 3. Talk about why we should wash our hands. Explain how handwashing removes germs that can make them sick. Handwashing kills those germs. 4. Talk to your children about how to wash their hands and how long to wash their hands. Using warm water, using the proper amount of soap (about the size of a quarter for liquid soap), and how to scrub with the soap. Make sure your kids know how to wash the tops of their hands, around their fingers, around their thumbs and under their nails. 5. Everyone should wash their hands for the length of the alphabet song or two rounds of the birthday song. 6. It is best to dry one’s hands with a towel. Friction also helps kill hand germs.
