We are excited to announce that we’ve added a slew of new resources to our standards-aligned middle school and high school English Language Arts (ELA) courses. These improved and expanded courses provide comprehensive support for mastering reading and vocabulary skills through engaging multimedia resources, including videos, articles, and interactive exercises.

What’s new in Khan Academy’s middle school ELA courses?

Our 7th– and 8th-grade reading & vocabulary courses were already packed with knowledge-building reading passages, high-utility vocabulary words, and mastery-enabled exercises to help students develop essential ELA skills. These courses now also include:

  • Long passage exercises: High-interest literature, nonfiction, and classic texts allow students to practice integrated reading skills and prepare for state and standardized exams.
  • Engaging instructional content: New videos and articles offer comprehensive coverage of reading strategies, making learning both accessible and enjoyable.
  • Reading strategy instruction: These articles are designed to teach key reading comprehension techniques, such as visualizing, predicting, using context clues, and activating prior knowledge.
  • Vocabulary videos: These videos help students build transferable word knowledge that supports reading comprehension and academic success.

What’s new in Khan Academy’s high school ELA courses?

Our 9th– and 10th-grade reading & vocabulary courses were already packed with knowledge-building reading passages, high-utility vocabulary words, and mastery-enabled exercises to help students develop essential ELA skills. These courses now also include:

  • Long passage exercises: Featuring high-interest literature, nonfiction, frequently taught classics, and historical documents, these exercises help students develop integrated reading skills while preparing for state tests, the SAT, ACT, and other standardized exams.
  • Comprehensive instructional content: Dozens of engaging videos and articles provide in-depth coverage of essential middle school reading skills, making learning accessible and enjoyable.
  • Test-taking strategies: Expert guidance and practical tips equip students to excel in state exams, the SAT, ACT, and their Khan Academy courses, ensuring they are fully prepared for academic success.

What’s unique about Khan Academy’s new and improved ELA courses?

These new courses don’t just develop literacy skills. They also build content knowledge across a range of middle and high school social studies and science topics. By integrating content from these subject areas, we help students deepen their understanding of key concepts and make cross-curricular connections. For example, 7th graders learn to cite text evidence while reading about trailblazing scientists like Jane Goodall and Chien-Shiung Wu, and 9th graders practice analyzing arguments while reading speeches by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Sojourner Truth.

Students are offered opportunities to engage with high-interest literature and nonfiction, historical documents, literary classics, and scientific and technical texts. This interdisciplinary approach ensures that students are not only mastering ELA skills but also enriching their overall academic experience and knowledge base.

Why should educators use these courses?

Khan Academy’s improved and expanded ELA courses feature a user-friendly, standards-aligned approach that provides both direct instruction and plenty of opportunities for practice and skills development. The courses include a balance of targeted exercises that allow students to focus on a single skill and long-passage exercises that provide integrated skills practice. The courses are designed to support knowledge building across content areas, reinforcing what students learn in their social studies and science classes.
