Review

“The Companion” (2025) is a mesmerizing sci-fi drama that delves into the intricate dynamics between humans and artificial intelligence. The story revolves around a highly advanced AI companion, designed to alleviate loneliness and provide emotional support.

As the narrative unfolds, the film poses profound questions about the nature of human connection, empathy, and intimacy. The AI companion’s growing self-awareness and emotional intelligence spark a complex exploration of what it means to be human.

The cast delivers strong performances, bringing depth and nuance to their characters. The cinematography is equally impressive, creating a hauntingly beautiful atmosphere that complements the film’s themes.

Sophie Thatcher as Iris in The Companion [Warner Media]

We see Jack Quaid and Sophie Thatcher play the role of Josh and Iris respectively. Jack’s girlfriend is the companion robot who is meant to give live and support to their human counterpart. The film progresses at a rapid rate and we are quickly introduced to the robot companion. A few twists later and you realise that this a world that has grown accustomed to many human-robot relationships.

Not for sensitive viewers, and the action scenes are top notch. I rate this movie a 4 out of 5. I would suggest skipping the trailer to avoid a few of the shocking moments. The story is both fast-paced and unpredictable. The story ends in such a way to offer a good closure to an excellent movie, with no expectation or even a suggestion of a possible sequel. The film encourages viewers to reflect on their own relationships with technology and the potential consequences of creating intelligent machines that mimic human emotions. Overall, “The Companion” is a gripping and introspective sci-fi drama that will resonate with fans of psychological thrillers and philosophical science fiction.

Catch at a cinema near you.
