In the midst of the new coronavirus, COVID-19, consumers headed to their local grocery stores in droves to stock up. When supplies ran out, they ordered goods online or eschewed groceries altogether and opted for take out.

As the country adapts to a new way of life, many grocers, retailers and delivery companies have seen a surge in demand even as countless other businesses have shuttered or slashed their workforce.

Service industry workers are now on the frontlines, ensuring the rest of the country gets their medicine, their groceries, their rush-ordered bidets and, yes, their large pepperoni pizzas with stuffed crust.

We wrangled several recruitment announcements from major employers and tallied more than 747,000 new openings available across the nation. Here’s who’s hiring.

Instacart: 300,000 Openings

The company said it’s seen an 150% increase in orders since the outbreak of COVID-19.

“As more people look for immediate, flexible earnings opportunities during this time, we hope that Instacart can be an additional source of income.” Instacart founder Apoorva Mehta said in an announcement.

The hiring initiative comes after the company implemented changes to curb the spread of the coronavirus among its gig workers, who are considered independent contractors. Last week, Instacart rolled out the “Leave It At My Door” feature for contact-less deliveries and also said it would pay two weeks of sick leave if its gig workers are diagnosed with COVID-19.

Under normal circumstances, two people may work on grocery orders. One shops. One delivers. The announcement said the new gigs will be “full-service,” implying new workers will have to shop and deliver.

Grocery gig workers can choose their own schedule after signing up online. Orders, schedules, pay and more are channeled through a smartphone app.
