Jobs come and go. An industry change or two on a resume is becoming the new norm. What’s constant are the skills you possess that come with you, no matter what a specific job entails. They’re called transferable skills. And in an ever-changing economy, knowing how to identify and talk about them is becoming increasingly important. Essential, even.

An upcoming online event will teach you everything you need to know about transferable (aka portable) skills, plus how to use them to your advantage. Career website Fairygodboss is hosting “Finding A Job In A Different Industry: How To Highlight Transferable Skills,” an hour-long webinar on May 12 at 2 p.m. Eastern.

During the interactive workshop, you’ll learn more about:

Which industries are booming — and which are busting — during the coronavirus. How to identify the right skills to showcase to employers. Using the context, action, results (CAR) method to talk about your transferable skills on your resume and during interviews.

Serving up the expert advice is Emilie Aries, CEO and founder of Bossed Up, a career training and development organization for women. Aries also hosts a podcast and wrote a book of the same name.

Pro Tip

Can’t make the live event? Go to Fairygodboss’s past events page for a video recording of the webinar, which will be posted shortly after May 12.

To reserve a spot, visit the webinar’s landing page and click “register.” You’ll be prompted to create an account using Google, Facebook or an email address. Fairygodboss accounts are completely free, as is admission to the webinar.

The event is hosted on Zoom, and instructions will be sent to the email address provided when you signed up. If you don’t have Zoom, consider dialing in by phone. (See confirmation email for instructions.)

Whether you need to pivot into a new role because of the pandemic or you’ve decided that now is the time for a major career change, knowing which of your skills to emphasize could be the key factor that lands you a totally new job. But unearthing those transferable skills isn’t always easy.

Should you focus on soft or hard skills? What do employers want to see in lieu of industry experience? How should you write your resume to play up certain skills? Bring your questions — and maybe even your resume for some on-the-spot maintenance — for Aries during the upcoming interactive workshop.

Though Fairygodboss is a career-advice community focused on empowering women in the workplace, all are welcomed to attend.
