PALMER — Atrial Fibrillation, or AFib, is a common type of heart arrhythmia in which the heart beats too fast, too slow, or irregularly. Although not considered a life-threatening condition, if undetected and left untreated, Afib can lead to greater heart complications.

Baystate Health’s Loyalty Program invites the community to learn more about a breakthrough in the treatment of AFib with Farapulse. The virtual event will be offered by Dr. Kyle Gobeil, cardiac electrophysiologist for Baystate Health, on Sunday, Feb. 16 from noon to 1 p.m. Gobeil will discuss this new, innovative, FDA-approved technology, which offers a unique treatment approach compared to traditional ablation procedures.

“Medications, such as beta blockers, are often prescribed to control the heart’s rhythm, and blood thinners, like anticoagulants, may also be prescribed if your doctor determines there is a risk of stroke,” Gobeil said. “When AFib can’t be managed with medication or lifestyle changes, an ablation procedure is the gold standard of treatment. A traditional procedure uses a catheter guided into the heart that generates thermal energy, extreme heat or cold, to ablate the small area of heart tissue that triggers the arrythmia. Pulse field ablation, particularly Farapulse, offers a safe, more efficient, and effective treatment option for patients with atrial fibrillation. The Farapulse PFA System uses electrical signals that isolate and ablate specific heart cells in a precise pattern, resulting in a quicker and safer procedure.”

Gobeil’s presentation is part of the Heart & Vascular Health Lecture Series, presented by the Baystate Heart & Vascular Program during American Heart Month. The presentations are designed by Baystate Health physicians to inform community members about the latest advances in heart and vascular care and how they can maintain or improve their heart and vascular health.
