Learn more about the critical bills we’re working on this year in California to improve our health system

California has made incredible progress in expanding health care access and we’re proud that we have a more robust health care system than ever before. While we fight to protect this progress at the federal level, we can take further steps at the state level now to help remove even more barriers to care for more Californians and improve affordability.
Here’s a brief overview of the state legislation we are supporting this year:

  • AB 280 (Aguiar-Curry) Ensuring Accurate Health Plan Provider Directories, will hold health insurers accountable for keeping their directories of providers up-to-date, so consumers can easily find care in-network.
  • AB 4 (Arambula) Removing Barriers to Covered California Based on Immigration Status, Toward #Health4All so all Californians—regardless of immigration status—can purchase health insurance themselves and move us closer to universal coverage.
  • AB 1312 (Schiavo) The Patient Debt Prevention Act will require hospitals to proactively screen patients for financial assistance, preventing more families from falling into medical debt.
  • AB 1415 (Bonta) Strengthening the Authority of the Office of Health Care Affordability (OHCA) to slow health care spending and increase transparency of private equity health care deals.

We’re also standing with our partners at the California LGBTQ+ Health and Human Services Network to support:

  • AB 1487 (Addis) Bolstering the 2TGI Wellness and Equity Fund to expand services for transgender, gender nonconforming, and intersex individuals.
  • SB 278 (Cabaldon) Improving HIV Care for Californians on Medi-Cal through better care coordination to connect them to vital services while maintaining strong privacy protections.

These reforms move us closer to a health care system that works for everyone. Stay tuned for ways to take action as these bills move through the state legislature.
