A homeschool day in the life looks different almost every day, right? Over on our Instagram page, we love to give you a peek into lots of homeschool days regardless of how they change day to day.
Today, we’re going to give you a peek into the homeschool day in the life of Jenna, homeschooling mom of three children, living in Minnesota.
We can all learn and be inspired by one another, regardless of our homeschool approach. It’s not about looking good for social media, it’s about the connection going on inside our homeschool walls and sharing with others what works for us.
We might all homeschool a little differently, but we can always look for ideas from each other that inspire, encourage and equip us in our own homeschool days. So each week we create blog posts for you to access later of each of those “days in the life”. We hope you keep coming back for more inspiration. Keep going, mama! These days at home are so worth it!
Meet Jenna
Jenna @simpleslowandsteady is homeschooling mom to three kids, married to her best friend, living in Minnesota. She is in her fourth year of homeschooling and currently has grades 3, 1, and pre-k.
She’s an early bird who loves coffee but is trying to acquire a taste for tea too.
Her favorite part of homeschooling is seeing firsthand each of her children’s milestones, and all of the freedom they have in their schedule.
Before the Day Starts

Hi friends! I’m Jenna from @simpleslowandsteady and I’ll be taking you along for a day in our homeschool life. I have a 3rd and 1st grader and pre-K.
If you’re a homeschool mom, you know it takes a lot out of us, so to be sure that I am feeding myself mentally, emotionally, and physically, I am up before the sun. My day starts at 4:30am, and I love it! Hot coffee. Quiet devotion. Reading. Writing. Whatever I need. It’s the only quiet part of my day.
Despite recent health challenges, movement is so important to me! It helps me so much, mentally. SO, if physically able, I go on a walk in the 6 o’clock hour (I do prefer to be outside, but am grateful for the treadmill amidst MN winter)!
My kids are also early risers, and everyone is usually awake before 7. While I get ready, they spend time with Dad before he’s off to work.
Back to the kitchen, I prepare our warm breakfast (or, what some homeschoolers call second breakfast) for our morning time. I use my Busy Mom’s Complete Meal Guide so food and meals are not stressful.
We begin our day at 8:30! I’m trying to be more consistent with this as the kids are getting older.
Morning Schoolwork
I like to be done with schoolwork by lunch ((unless the curiosity bug hits and we deep dive into different topics organically)), so our mornings are usually pretty full!
We start with morning time: we gather around the table with a warm breakfast and do calendar, Bible/devotional, catechism, character building, & hymn song. I have a large collection of books I rotate for these. This might be our favorite part of the day .
Pre-K is a loose term in our home. It’s interest led at this point, however because she watches her big siblings do school, she is eager to join in. I work with her first to fill her cup before she runs off to play or color.
My big kids (1st and 3rd) do independent work while I work with one child, and then we flip flop. The core material we cover every single day is:
- math
- language arts
- copy work
- reading
- CC memory work
After everything is done, everyone puts their books away and we transition to lunch!
A Reminder for the Homeschool Mom
Who’s well done are you working for?
Despite the long hours of curriculum comparing, book selections, and preparations, there isn’t a lot of fanfare for the homeschool mom. More often than not, there are complaints. But I just want to remind you that God sees.
He sees the way you serve your kids in the details, the way you show up every day for them, the way you set the table and organize their books, the way you sweep the crumbs behind them, and lay out the lesson supplies–and that’s the only fanfare we need.
The best well done we can receive is: “Well done, my good and faithful servant; you have been faithful in the little things, so I will give you many more.” May we remember this today, and tomorrow, and the next day, as we set the table, prepare the books, and sweep the crumbs.
Thank you so much to Jenna for sharing your family’s day with us!
