"That's not a deer, it's a bear," said Timbah, pointing to a large furry mass of muscle in the bushes behind the camp. "And it's not leaving." The bear capped a dynamic day on the water. A westerly weather system blew in last night, bringing with it a building sea and on and off rain. Clouds hugged the hills and cliffs, bringing a moody beauty to the Shiretoko coastline, and the sulfurous Kamuiwakka Falls popped bright against the gloom. The shoreline grew increasingly inhospitable, with steep rocky beaches and a no-land wilderness zone. We ended the day with vertical granite walls straight into the sea, allowing for some enjoyable play in big-sea reflective swell. Source
