Latina Leadership: Unleashing Power and Potential

Happy New Year! It’s been a while since we’ve hit publish on this site, but I’m excited to get back to it especially as we enter our second decade (can you believe it?)!  As we kick off the new year, I want to share some shifts in content that I hope will make you just as excited as I am. Over the past ten years, we have discussed the need to increase Latina representation within the legal industry. When I first started writing, we were at 2% of all US attorneys. Recently, a study came out, and imagine my surprise that we’re now at 3%. …a 1 percent increase in one decade. While I’m happy to see any growth, it does not feel sufficient. It actually highlights a pattern of how little representation we have in spaces of power. I see the same statistic attach itself to Latinas when we discuss similar roles: less than 2% of us are in c-suite or federal executive positions, less than 2% are doctors, less than 1% on boards, less than 1% make partners…should I go on? I see the data point and keep asking myself: what will it take for us to fully value Latina leadership?  What will it take for decision-makers to recognize the potential of Latinas and what do we need to do to support Latina leadership, power, and influence? In the new year, and in this next decade of Latinas Uprising, I want us to focus on leadership at all levels, identify barriers, and advocate for policies that will allow us to flourish throughout the spectrum of leadership–from emerging to established. I won’t pretend that I have all the answers on how to do that right now or that the solution fits in a 600 word blog post. But I do want to get this conversation going and want us to dig deep to discuss what Latina leadership looks like, how overcoming cultural and socioeconomic barriers affects our approach to leadership, and innovative ways to increase our access to positions of power and opportunity. I’m really excited to create a space for us to have this conversation and a support system for one another! At the same time, our mission to increase Latina lawyers stays the same. We must have more Latina attorneys to improve this profession and to create leadership pipelines into other spaces. I see this work and content as intertwined and am really eager to start the dialogue while still offering our best advice and guidance to new and aspiring attorneys. Will you join me in this discussion? I hope you will, regardless of where you are at in your professional journey because one thing I have learned in the last ten years researching and reading about Latinas–when our leadership and potential remains untapped, it is a loss to everyone. In 2025, let’s commit to unleashing the power of Latinas, together!   The post Latina Leadership: Unleashing Power and Potential appeared first on Latinas Uprising.
