If you thought that reducing sugar for baking would affect the deliciousness of banana bread, then you haven’t tried my recipe with lower sugar. This banana bread is moist, flavorful, and perfectly sweet, proving that you don’t need a ton of sugar to enjoy a classic treat. In addition, I’ll be sharing links to some of my other favorite banana recipes, so you can find the perfect one for you!
Why Lower Sugar?
We all know the downside of excess sugar – from energy crashes to weight gain. But beyond that, making lower-sugar choices is an investment in our long-term health. Reducing your sugar intake can contribute to better blood sugar control, improved heart health, and a lower risk of chronic diseases. And in this recipe, I’ve taken it a step further by eliminating added salt and using heart-healthy canola oil in place of butter, margarine, or shortening. This lower-sugar banana bread is a delicious and healthy way to support your well-being without sacrificing flavor.
The Magic of Ripe Bananas
The secret to this incredible lower-sugar banana bread lies in the power of perfectly ripe bananas. As they ripen and develop those telltale brown spots, their starches convert to sugars, intensifying their sweetness naturally. This process is backed by scientific research, with studies showing a significant increase in their natural sugar content as bananas ripen (see, for example, the study on banana ripening).
This natural sweetness is what allows us to minimize the added sugar in this recipe. And the benefits don’t stop there! Ripe bananas also contribute to the bread’s wonderfully moist and tender texture.
How to Make Lower Sugar Banana Bread
You’ll be surprised how simple this recipe is. Ready to bake? Here’s what you’ll need:
Ingredients
½ cups of canola oil
2 large eggs
2/3 cup of sugar
3 mashed ripe bananas
2 cups of sifted flour
1 teaspoon of baking soda, leveled
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350-degrees.
- Mix the oil, sugar and egg together in a large mixing bowl. You can use a whisk.
- Stir in the mashed bananas next.
- Sift together the flour and baking soda next and combine with the moistened ingredients.
- Pour the batter into two well-greased small bread pans ( 5 x 3-inches). If you make one regular size bread pan, increase baking time to about 50-55 minutes.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, depending on how your oven is regulated. Test with a toothpick, slender knife or cake tester to see if anything sticks for determining doneness.
- Allow to cool in pans for about five minutes before removing and transferring to a cooling rack.
- ENJOY!
