What’s Phasing out in 2025
As we move into 2025, certain fashion staples are starting to fade (and it’s for the best). Overly distressed denim, micro handbags, and ultra-chunky sneakers are taking a backseat. Super-skinny jeans and low-rise trousers are also stepping aside to make room for more relaxed and tailored silhouettes (but a tapered skinny jean style is actually on the rise). Instead of fast fashion, there’s a growing focus on sustainability and timeless wardrobe investments (love!).
Fashion Trends that are in for 2025
The trends I’m seeing for this year are all about balancing nostalgia and modernity. There are mixes of classic looks with contemporary twists. The key trends I’m seeing (and going to lean into a bit more in 2025) include:
Trending Colors & Patterns
Sunset Shades
I just got an email from my favorite brand highlighting their favorite 2025 trend: sunset shades. Yellows, oranges, pinks, and reds. I’m so excited about these cheerful colors taking the front seat this year! Look at this happy roundup from Tuckernuck.
Stripes
You’ll see mentions of this in the styles section of this post, but stripes are back! I’ve always loved stripes (and never stopped wearing them), but I’m thrilled to see so many fun takes on my favorite pattern this year. If you’re unsure how to incorporate stripes without feeling too bold, this Blue and White Stripe Finn Popover is a perfect gateway option.
Powder Pink
I love every shade of pink, and I love that romantic, soft pink shades are big this year. They lean more neutral but are a stylish alternative to tan or mauve. I’m most excited about this trend! This Adina Sweater is my most recent powder pink purchase, and I love that I can wear it now and into the spring. Oh, and this Gabrielle Convertible Box Jacket is such a fabulous light pink accessory.
Maximalist Prints
Bold patterns, florals, and geometric designs making a statement. My house definitely leans more maximalist, so we’ll see if I like dressing this way. I just got a very fun skirt from Briton Court that almost matches my tiger dining room chairs! This trend is all about layering different textures, prints, and colors in a way that feels intentional yet playful. Think of clashing patterns, mixed textiles, and fearless combinations that create a standout look.
Checks and Gingham
A fresh take on these classic prints for a preppy and polished look. I’m happy both checks and gingham are back since I feel feminine in those patterns. A gingham dress is hard to beat in the warmer months. I’m itching to get my hands on this Navy Trellis Gingham Karrie Golf Skirt for the spring. (See more cute golf outfits here!)
Other colors and patterns I’m seeing in 2025
- Bright Colors – Vibrant colors like neon greens, electric blues, and magentas to boost mood and confidence.
- Butter Yellow – This reminds me of the 1950s and ’60s when kitchens were this color. Butter yellow is Kitchen Aid’s color of the year! I don’t love this shade of yellow on me, if you do, you should absolutely embrace this trend.
- Cherry Red – More up my alley than super vibrant colors, and I’m thrilled it’s trending this year. I love that it can be dressed up or down, and it actually feels more neutral than you might expect (similarly to a dark green).
- Metalic Shine – Shimmery fabrics and metallic finishes for standout evening and statement pieces. I’ve always been a gold girl, so I’ll continue wearing gold jewelry and shoes!
Trending Styles for 2025
These are trending “aesthetics” that I’m appreciating as we dive into 2025.
Fisherman Style
I’ve always been a sucker for stripes and knit, and it’s having a big moment in 2025. Inspired by traditional fisherman sweaters, this trend brings warmth and texture to everyday outfits. Chunky knits, ribbed patterns, and wide stripes give off a cozy yet effortlessly chic vibe. Pair a fisherman-style sweater with cotton shorts or tailored trousers, or layer it over a slip dress for a modern contrast.
East-West Bags
Elongated, horizontal handbags for practicality and a super chic design. The New York Shoulder bag by DeMeillier is a good example– I don’t think the size is practical as a mom (I need to hold more stuff). But this Mark and Graham Elisabetta Slouch Leather Handbag has a nice horizontal shape that I could actually use.
Balloon Details
I don’t love balloon-style skirts or dresses, but I LOVE a puff sleeve, and I feel like that falls into the balloon category. This puff-sleeve tee is a great staple for every closet. It’s cute with blue and white denim, shorts, and skirts.
Boho
I’m very hesitant about boho coming back, but since Tuckernuck has some really cool pieces, I’m open to it. Here’s Tuckernuck’s boho-style roundup that’s tempting me.
Romantic Whimsy
I love that super feminine silhouettes are back this year. I started to notice more pearls and bows this winter, and I’m happy to see that continuing into the spring. Again, Tuckernuck does it best with their romantic whimsy roundup.
Other trends I’m seeing in 2025:
- Balletcore and sheer fabrics – Soft pastel hues, tulle skirts, wrap tops, and ballet flats inspired by ballet aesthetics. Sheer fabrics are also in, so you’ll see transparent materials used in blouses, skirts, and dresses, often layered for dimension.
- Fringe Details – Fringe on jackets, skirts, and accessories for texture and a playful, bohemian vibe. This isn’t something I see myself embracing a ton, but if I were going out on the town more often, I might test out a fringe skirt.
- Mod Minis – Playful mini dresses that are the perfect base for statement footwear.
- Sustainable Styles – Focus on eco-friendly materials, ethical production, and timeless designs are back this year. I feel like our world has shifted towards more sustainably focused shopping in recent years, which is exciting!
- New Business Codes – Super high-waist trousers, clean-lined pencil skirts, oversized blazers, and polished pointed-toe pumps are in for 2025. If you work in an office, I’m excited that these styles are trending because nothing is more chic than a pointed-toe pump.
- Fluid Shapes – This style is almost the opposite of the business dress code above. We’re talking about flowing silhouettes that skim over the body for a luxe, ethereal feel. I tend to prefer a dress that’s more fitted since I’m petite (and oversized items can swallow my frame), but I’m going to try to embrace this look for easy summer dresses.
- Statement Leather – Leather jackets and pieces reimagined for spring. I’m on the fence about this! I like leather, but I’m not 100% on board yet for springtime leather.
Footwear Trends
Shoes are making a statement in 2025 with bold designs and reimagined classics.
- Sneakers – Sleeker, minimalist designs take over the chunky sneaker trend. This pair of Stella Sneakers from Larroude is a really fun option.
- Boots – Knee-high and over-the-knee boots with structured silhouettes.
- Heels – Pointed-toe pumps and platform heels are making a strong comeback. I LOVE a pointed-toe pump.
- Toe Details – Square and almond-toe designs are trending for a modern touch. I just noticed this cute pair of Bridgette Shoes on Ann Mashburn’s website and can’t stop thinking about them. So polished!
- Animal Prints – Wild patterns on footwear add a bold statement to any outfit.
Jeans on Trend for 2025
Denim continues to evolve, moving away from overly distressed looks to more polished and classic styles.
- Wide-Leg Jeans – A relaxed, elongating silhouette remains a go-to. Big thumbs up for this!
- The Return of Skinny Jeans – Yes they are back, but think more of a polished leg-skimming jean rather than skin-tight of the 2000s. The 2025 take on skinny jeans focuses on comfort and versatility—think stretch-infused fabrics, slightly looser ankle openings, and higher waists that create a sleeker silhouette.
- High-Waisted Trousers – A staple for both casual and business attire.
- Classic Straight-Leg Jeans – Timeless and versatile.
- Dark Wash Denim – A sophisticated, polished take on jeans.
- Minimal Distressing – Clean, structured denim looks are replacing heavily ripped styles, which this 40-year-old can appreciate.
Accessory Trends
The right accessories complete a look, and in 2025, they’re bigger, bolder, and more polished.
- East-West Bags – I mentioned these above, but wider, elongated handbags are in!
- Chunky Gold Jewelry – Bold chains and oversized hoops add drama. I tend to go for dainty, but I want to get outside of my comfort zone a bit with these. I have two great pieces from a few years ago that I styled here.
- Structured Belts – Wide belts cinching the waist for a flattering shape. I’m a BIG belt girl – both skinny and wider belts.
- Retro Sunglasses – Oval, cat-eye, and oversized shades make a statement.
- Silk Scarves – A versatile accessory that adds sophistication to any outfit.
2025 is all about blending classic styles with contemporary updates, making fashion both exciting and timeless. Whether you’re updating your wardrobe or looking for investment pieces, these trends offer the perfect mix of elegance and modern edge.
