Video source: Artur GudievI've been a big fan of Rick and Morty ever since it hit and managed to finally get around to finishing season four the other day. Needless to say, I was a bit disappointed. Something about it just didn't feel as fresh or funny as previous seasons and I hope things improve over the next seasons (they have a lot of episodes to get this right, though). I'm going to take a quick overview of the season and tell you what I liked and didn't like about the show. "Edge of Tomorty: Rick Die Rickpeat"The first episode of Rick and Morty season 4 was a fun intro to the season. The premise was pretty cool and I liked the idea of toying with alien technology to save lives and potentially prevent your own death being turned on its head. The references to Akira and manga were nicely done, too. "The Old Man and the Seat"The second episode was an interesting take on The Old Man and the Sea, done in an over the top and irreverent style. It was extremely funny and I liked Glootie. The absurdity of someone being so overprotective of where they poop was wonderful, too. "One Crew over the Crewcoo's Morty"The inevitable heist episode of Rick and Morty was a fun take on the genre. Mr. Poopybutthole is great and I enjoyed seeing him return. "Claw and Hoarder: Special Ricktim's Morty"Rick and Morty takes on fantasy. I thought it was a good parody on the genre and it worked well. While I appreciate many fans might not have liked the deviation, it was written well and a good episode. "Rattlestar Ricklactica"I didn't enjoy this Rick and Morty episode, sorry. Yes, it's clever and there are lots of time travel shenanigans but I didn't find it very funny. "Never Ricking Morty"This is where I feel the season really started to sag. The idea was intriguing but it was filled with too many references to script writing to make it funny. I thought the violent bits would have evened things out but it didn't quite work."Promortyus"This had some good moments (such as when Rick and Morty start destroying the Glorzo's city) but it wasn't the strongest and could have benefited from more time in the oven. The Alien theme was cool but it wasn't the strongest and I didn't find it that funny. "The Vat of Acid Episode"I wasn't fully sold on this. The episode doesn't get going until a few minutes in, which bothered me a little. The idea of a "save point" you could return to was a good one and should have been the focus from the start. This episode felt like a missed opportunity. "Childrick of Mort"Over the top, insane, classic Rick and Morty. I think this was one of the better episodes in season 4 and it's a shame it took so long to get here. Fighting a god was cool, as was the idea of Rick getting a living planet pregnant (a reference, I take it, to Ego the Living Planet). "Star Mort Rickturn of the Jerri"The season finale of Rick and Morty season 4 was good but I think it need to be a little more over the top. I didn't find Jerry's adventures with the invisible garbage truck funny and I hope they find a reason to ditch the character next season. Parodying Star Wars was fun but I wanted more. Concluding ThoughtsSeason 4 was okay and could have been so much better. I hope season 5 learns from it and returns to an over the top style.
