Just Give It a Go: Jenny’s True Grit Story

 

At 88 years old, Jenny has set a remarkable example of what it means to embrace life’s challenges with an open heart and determined spirit. As the oldest participant in all of True Grit’s 2024 events, she embodies the mantra of “just give it a go” and proves that age is no barrier to adventure.

 

Jenny’s journey to True Grit began with a lifelong love of movement. From playing netball and gymnastics in her earlier years. Jenny then finds herself asking, “Well, what do I do now?” Jenny knew she needed to prioritise her health. Seven years ago, she joined an exercise class at State Of Movement, a fitness community catering to all ages and levels. This group, led by Shannon Barry, would become instrumental in her preparation for True Grit.

 

When the idea of forming a True Grit team came up, Jenny didn’t hesitate. She joined forces with The State of Movement. Within this group were Jenny and four others, aged 60 to 88, and together they formed the “Gritty Grannies.” Complete with custom shirts, the group embraced the spirit of True Grit: camaraderie, challenge, and fun.

 

The camaraderie with her team is what made all the difference. “Having the five of us together was one of the highlights,” she shared. “We were only chatting about it the other week, asking if we would give it another go.”

 

The Joy of “Having a Go”

 

Jenny’s favourite part of the course wasn’t a specific obstacle but the attitude of tackling each one with an open mind. She recalls, “Having a go at them, and if I only get so far, that’s fine.” For her, it was about participation, not perfection.

 

While the mud challenge at the end was particularly tough — “You couldn’t lift your feet” — Jenny powered through, buoyed by the encouragement of her team and her daughter, who ran alongside her.

 

 

Consistency is Key

 

When it came to preparation, Jenny kept it simple but effective. Training three times a week at State Of Movement, she credited her consistent routine for building the strength and resilience needed for the course.

 

The support from her trainers and teammates kept her motivated, reinforcing that fitness is a journey.

 

Redefining Challenges

 

Jenny’s perspective on challenges is both inspiring and humbling. She views them as personal and adaptable, depending on one’s outlook.

 

“Challenge is a bit of a funny word – life is a bit of a challenge. If you have any desire or inclination to move and to look after your health, then you’ll take up a challenge as big or small as it is. It might be taking the dog for a walk. It doesn’t really matter”.

Jenny says “I am always up for a challenge”, knowing that challenges, no matter their size, shape the way we approach life.

Jenny’s story is a testament to the power of community, consistency, and courage. Whether it’s scaling Mount Kilimanjaro with 8 others or wading through mud, she proves that the biggest reward often comes from simply showing up and giving it a go.
