Courtesy of the City of Williams Lake: The City of Williams Lake was thrilled to see the wheels put in motion last week on plans to develop a new skateboard park in Boitanio Park in Williams Lake. Roughly 50 people attended a skateboard park design and information workshop on Thursday, May 30 led by New Line Skateparks’ Everett Tetz and Denise Biziaev after several community members reached out to the organization for assistance. New Line Skateparks is an internationally-renowned, full-service municipal skate park design and construction team. During the meeting Tetz outlined the process to move forward with construction, including community engagement, planning, fundraising, a design phase, programming and many park ‘build’ options and examples that attendees were pleased to see. “The City of Williams Lake is excited about the possibility to further enhance its recreation opportunities and, while the Nathan Matthews Memorial Skate Park has been well loved and used by the community since its construction in the mid-1990s it is, unfortunately, nearing the end of its lifetime,” said Stacey Miranda, Director of Community Services. “A new skate park could have the size and space to adequately accommodate many different user groups, including skateboarders, cruisers, longboarders, bike riders, roller skaters and more. We’re looking forward to working with all involved parties, who are keen in keeping the community informed on any progress made towards making this a reality.” During the meeting participants were given the opportunity to view and discuss several examples of skate parks in other municipalities and to provide input on what a future skate park in Williams Lake could look like. The site being investigated is beside, or could replace, the current skate park in Boitanio Park.
