A pre-convention debate — quite unusual. Why? Is this pure ego-jerk-reaction to Trump’s challenges? Quite possibly, but as my mind pondered what is going on, something else has come to mind. I have said, quite publicly, that for the Democratic party to successfully “sub out” Joe Biden, Biden has to undergo some sort of very public, very visible crisis. An open convention is unknown to younger voters and I can just hear the Squad mavens screaming “insider power – this convention is illegitimate!” We have spent decades turning the conventions from functioning party gatherings to media events, reversing that tide on a dime is not going to go down well. But the timing of this debate, well that would give the media time to educate the Democrat base on what happens if Biden shows himself incapable of doing the job tonight. Further they could cast his failure as Trump’s fault in some imaginative way, as if words can actually harm. Pure speculation on my part, and against the tide of prevailing opinion, but it is possible that this evening’s debate is designed specifically for Biden to fail and fail sufficiently to justify and open convention. Then what?
