Joe Biden has, at this point, robbed himself of any opportunity to leave the presidency with dignity. Calls for his departure are now very public and from the highest places in his party. If he withdraws it will be known that he has been forced out. The public nature of all of it is rooted in his refusal to go reasonably, forcing others to go pubic to increase the pressure. If he stays in, he will most likely lose – no dignity there. If he stays in and wins, the cloud of suspicion over his performance is inescapable. The man has sacrificed every shred of dignity he has to retain an office he has desired for at least forty years. And at this juncture one must ask to what end? Simply to be president? His argument for why he should stay in has, to date, been about what he thinks he has done – not what he is going to do. The immense damage wrought by his infirmed incompetence makes pity hard to come by, but as a Christian man I am compelled to step back and look at the man and what I see is truly pathetic – deeply worthy of pity – consumed by a lust for an office he in incapable of putting to any use.
