Around ten days ago Helene ravaged a huge swath of the country – including the region where I live. It is heartbreaking to watch my neighbors struggle as they are. And now, just a few days later, Milton threatens to destroy a large chunk of Florida. All the while, FEMA claims to be out of money. I am currently, interrupting actually, packing to drive back to East Tennessee from the Beltway – where all weekend the weather has been beautiful. Where even those officials that toured Helene’s devastation did so after the storm when the destruction was obvious, but the fear had passed – they have no firsthand experience of what it is like; they may muster sympathy, but empathy escapes them.
