The DraftKings odds for the next Cowboys coach, which have been back and forth more frequently than Alan Benes and David Puddy recently, have risen again. And there’s a new favorite.
Current Cowboys offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer is now the frontrunner at -250. Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, who spent five years on the coaching staff in Dallas, was previously the favorite. He’s now at +250.
The early favorite, Colorado coach Deion Sanders, has dropped to +750 — there are six others ahead of him.
DraftKings has lowered the odds on several occasions, apparently due to market volatility. And they could go down again.
For now, though, it would take a $250 bet on Schottenheimer to win $100.
Here’s why Schottenheimer makes sense. Quarterback Dak Prescott wants continuity. He is unwilling to adapt to a new offensive system.
If, as appears likely, coach Mike McCarthy left only because he and owner/GM Jerry Jones couldn’t agree on the length of a new deal, why not move Schottenheimer and keep it going?
Here’s why Schottenheimer makes no sense. Now 51, he has never held the position of head coach at any level. He has never been that serious to be an NFL head coach. He has failed as an offensive coordinator in several NFL stops.
To say the least would not be an inspired appointment would be an understatement. But it would give Jones someone who would be grateful enough for the opportunity to not complain about the owner’s habit of conducting multiple radio interviews per week and holding post-game media scrums and treating the workplace like an amusement park.
