In the final ODI of the series, India beat England by 142 runs to whitewash the host in the final series before the highly anticipated Champions Trophy.
India were put to bat by the tourists. The Men in Blue suffered a major blow in the initial overs as the centurion from the previous game, Rohit Sharma, had to return to the pavilion after scoring just one run. The opener Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli (52) stitched a massive 116-run partnership which laid the platform for a big total. The big partnership was broken by the in-form Adil Rashid who sent back Kohli. Continuing his good form Gill registered a century before departing for 112 off 102. Valuable contributions from Shreyas Iyer (78), KL Rahul (40) and Hardik Pandya (17) helped India to go past the 350 mark on the scoreboard.
With 357 to chase, England had a healthy start as openers, Phil Salt (23) and Ben Duckett (34), contributed some quick runs to the scoreboard. Tom Banton (38), Joe Root (24) and Harry Brook (19) stayed on the crease to stir the chase in the right direction but the Indian bowlers got the better of them as the touring team got bundled out for 214.
The Indian bowling attack had a great day at the office as everyone who rolled their sleeves pocketed wickets. Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, Axar Patel and Hardik have two wickets each to their names while Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav had a wicket each.
The English bowlers were taken to the cleaners as they couldn’t contain the Indian batters. Rashid was the pick among the bowlers with four wickets to his name and Mark Wood registered a couple of scalps, while the rest had a wicket each to their column.
Gill was awarded the Man of the Match for his scintillating century, which was tagged with 14 boundaries and three sixes. The 25-year-old was also named the Man of the Series for scoring 259 runs in the 50-over format series.
Scorecard:
India: 356/10, Overs 50, Shubman Gill 112, Adil Rashid 4/64
England: 214/10, Overs 34.2, Tom Banton 38, Axar Patel 2/22
