The Los Angeles Lakers have had one superstar after another fall into their lap, most recently when the Dallas Mavericks traded Luka Doncic to them out of the blue for Anthony Davis, Max Christie and a first-round draft pick.
Analyst Charles Barkley recently shared that he was almost another one of those superstars who found themselves with the Lakers, only to have it reversed.
During a recent episode of his podcast with Ernie Johnson, Barkley answered a question about NBA trades that almost happened during his playing days.
“I got traded to the Lakers. True story. … My agent calls me: ‘The Sixers pulled out the deal.’ … That’s the weirdest trade situation I ever been involved in,” Barkley said, via NBA on TNT.

The story perhaps explains some of his disdain for the Lakers, which has been apparent on “Inside The NBA” over the years.
Barkley was excited to finally be leaving Philadelphia as he was on record at the time as being unhappy, though he never officially demanded a trade.
He had to wait until that offseason to get his wish when he was sent to the Phoenix Suns for Jeff Hornacek, Tim Perry and Andrew Lang.
Barkley joining the Lakers at that time would have been interesting, as it was right around the time Magic Johnson left the team due to his HIV diagnosis.
