While Rempe has earned his fair share of penalty minutes throughout his career, the Rangers have twice this week objected to calls against the six-foot-nine tough guy.
“The size of him, the way he plays the game, it just draws attention,” head coach Peter Laviolette said after Thursday’s win over the Minnesota Wild, according to Mollie Walker of the New York Post. “It’s unfortunate because sometimes, like tonight, he’s not really doing anything and he’s in the box.”
Laviolette was responding to a question about an interference penalty Rempe was given early in the third period, when New York led 1-0. Rempe was penalized for a collision with Minnesota’s Devin Shore, even though Shore skated into him while looking the other way at the puck.

That play came after another penalty called against Rempe in Tuesday’s loss to the Jets. In that game, Rempe was whistled for goaltender interference despite it appearing as though he was pushed into Connor Hellebuyck by Jets forward Morgan Barron.
“I didn’t agree with the call,” Laviolette said after the Jets game. “They’re saying they want to protect the goaltenders, but I don’t know. I just didn’t agree with it.”
Rempe has appeared in just 48 career games but has already collected 123 penalty minutes and two suspensions for a combined 12 games. While his reputation as an enforcer is well known, the Rangers have his back as they push for the playoffs.
