Gabrielle Bejani, "Dipped in Thoughts", 2023 Gabrielle Bejani is a French and Lebanese artist living in London. She is interested in exploring sexuality, intimacy, and sensuality with a feminist lens. In her collages and paintings she examines her own sexual bias and contradicting behaviours with unjudgmental care, reflecting on the fabric of mainstream intimacy. As well as sometimes hinting towards outlines and/or souvenirs of queer feminist utopias. Gabrielle’s description of the work: "This artwork titled Dipped in Thoughts is a multi-media collage composed of several layers of tracing paper, watercolour on paper and velvet. It takes root in reflecting upon the intricate relationship between Sensuality and belief systems. Drawing on the tension between the lightness of the tracing paper ruffled collage and the apparent heaviness of the burgundy velvet, the artwork hints at the often-overlooked link between arousal and personal conception of sexuality. Something often ascribed to “feminine” sensualities, when actually all types of sexualities are lodged in certain beliefs surrounding ourselves and our desired relationships with romantic or sexual partners. In the artwork, Fingerprints are spread out on the overpowering rich velvet right side, while an outline of a hand reaches out of it into the slightly opaque evanescent collage. The dreamy blurriness of the layers of tracing papers nudges at the impenetrable nature of our own personal mental constellation. A reference to the foreignness we all encounter in our relationship with ourselves when trying to fully uncover the complexity of our desires, fears, joy, apathy and more."
