The Lady Roadrunners had their five-game win streak snapped this weekend suffering road losses on both Friday and Saturday nights.

Playing in Show Low on Friday night, Holbrook couldn’t overcome the tough Cougar defense which held the Birds to single digits in each quarter of the 47-29 loss. Holbrook struggled mightily from the field, shooting just 22% for the game. At the free throw line, a normally good shooting team made just seven of 23 attempts.

Show Low led 14-8 after the first quarter and held a 24-16 lead at the half. They slowly pulled away in the second half.

“We knew they had a good defense, and we didn’t do a good job with the ball. We had 25 turnovers and when you combine that with the way we shot, we didn’t give ourselves much of a chance to win against the best team in our region,” stated Coach Greg Perkins.

Channing Harrington did score in double figures with 10. Deya Guerrero added 8; Chelsey Begaye, 6; Shayla Attakai, 2; Angelica Uranga-Willams, 2; and Bailey Willams added a single point.

Saturday the team made the journey to Kayenta to face 10th ranked Monument Valley. Holbrook played better in this game but poor rebounding and a strong performance from the Mustangs senior post player left Holbrook with a hard fought 52-47 loss.

Holbrook made just one field goal in the first quarter but offset that with five free throws and led 7-6 at the end of the first. In the second, they got two treys from Harrington, and 5 points from Guerrero, to trail 23-22 at the half. Both teams netted 14 in the third, with Harrington adding 7 to her total and Guerrero hitting one from distance.

In the fourth, Monument’s post player took over the game. She scored 8 consecutive points, but Holbrook still trailed by just 2 points with under a minute to play. A poorly timed turnover and the Mustangs took advantage closing the game out at the end.

“We played much better than the previous night everywhere except on the boards. We did a poor job of blocking out their big girl. Those second and third chance opportunities really hurt us. Offensively we played well enough to win, but too many rebounds for them cost us the game,” stated Perkins.

Harrington played well and finished the game with a team-high 18 points. Guerrero added 11, Bailey Williams, 7; Alayna Yazzie, 5; Angelica Uranga-Williams, 3; and Chesley Begaye added 3.

Holbrook drops to 11-12 overall and is now 5-8 in regular season games. They were ranked 15th prior to the two losses and will head into this week with two home games. Alchesay comes to town on Tuesday, then a rematch with second-ranked Snowflake with happen on Friday night.

Next week the team travels to Alchesay on Tuesday, then closes out the regular season at home vs Show Low on Wednesday. Holbrook is in a position to qualify for the 3A state tournament for the 16th consecutive season. A couple more wins in their final four games and they could possibly host a first round game.
