Recognizing the Presence

KINDRED Daily Gospel Reflection

Gospel Reading: Matthew 17:9a, 10–13

As Jesus and His disciples come down from the mountain of the Transfiguration, the disciples ask why the scribes say Elijah must come first. Jesus replies that Elijah indeed comes and will restore all things, but has already come and was not recognized, and that the Son of Man will likewise suffer at their hands. The disciples understand He is speaking of John the Baptist.

Gospel Reflection: “Recognizing the Presence”

The disciples are walking down the mountain — away from dazzling glory and back into ordinary ground. On the way, Jesus speaks about Elijah and John the Baptist, about a presence that has already come but was not recognized.

This is a quiet warning for us: it is possible to stand in the very presence of God’s work and not see it.

We often expect God to move in obvious ways: big miracles, dramatic answers, clear signs. But much of His work is subtle — a slow conversion of heart, a new courage to forgive, a gentle nudge toward service, an unexpected consolation in prayer.

Advent trains our eyes to notice. The Savior came once in hiddenness — a child in a manger, far from the centers of power. He continues to come quietly in Word and sacrament, in the poor and suffering, in the small graces of our daily life.

Like the disciples, we need help to connect what God has promised with what He is actually doing now. The Spirit wants to teach us to say: “This is Him. He is here.”

One Thing To Do Today:

Choose one ordinary moment today — a conversation, a task, a quiet drive — and deliberately ask: “Lord, how are You present here?” Pay attention to what stirs in your heart.

Closing Prayer:

Lord Jesus, open my eyes to recognize Your presence, even when You come in quiet and hidden ways. Through the intercession of Saint Lucy, patroness of sight, grant me clear spiritual vision to see and follow You. Amen.
