Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the way entrepreneurs start and grow businesses. Today, you can ask AI to write a business plan, suggest marketing ideas, estimate startup costs, or explain permit requirements in just a few seconds. These tools can be a valuable starting point, helping you gather information faster than ever before.

But information alone isn’t a business strategy.

AI doesn’t know your customers, your community, your financial situation, or the unique challenges and opportunities facing your business. It can’t tell you whether your assumptions are realistic or whether an opportunity makes sense in today’s market. That’s where working with an experienced business consultant makes all the difference.

At the Small Business Development Center at The University of Scranton (SBDC), we see AI as a tool, not a replacement for personalized business guidance. In fact, we encourage entrepreneurs to use AI to brainstorm ideas, organize information, and explore possibilities. Then, bring those ideas to us.

Our consultants can help you evaluate what you’ve created, identify potential gaps, and turn general information into an actionable plan. Whether you’re just starting a business or looking to grow an existing one, we provide confidential, no-cost consulting tailored to your goals.

Before investing significant time or money, it’s important to validate the information and determine how it applies to your specific business.

An SBDC consultant can help you evaluate questions such as:

  • Is there real market demand for this idea?
  • Are my startup cost estimates realistic?
  • What funding options are available?
  • What licenses, permits, or regulations apply?
  • Is this the right growth strategy for my business?

Sometimes a single conversation can help you avoid costly mistakes, refine your approach, or uncover opportunities you may have overlooked.

National AI Day is July 16, it’s a great reminder that while technology continues to evolve, successful businesses are still built on thoughtful planning, informed decisions, and trusted guidance.

AI provides information. The SBDC provides what AI can’t: Real people. Real conversations. Real business guidance.

If you’re using AI to help move your business forward, we’d love to help you take the next step. Contact the Small Business Development Center at The University of Scranton to schedule a confidential, no-cost consulting appointment and put your ideas to the reality check.
