At Robert Ryan Catering & Design, mentoring the next generation of hospitality professionals is a top priority. We’ve shared Toby’s Culinary Co-Op journey, but we also offer an event management internship program. Our internship exists for three key reasons: to provide hospitality students with real-world experience that sets them apart, to offer mentorship and foster professional growth, and to cultivate a genuine enthusiasm for the industry.
This past summer, we were proud to support Avah Virus, a Hospitality Management student at York College of Pennsylvania, who joined us as a summer intern and made meaningful contributions while learning the ropes of the hospitality world.
Over the course of her internship, Avah provided valuable support, shared new ideas, and fully immersed herself in the many moving parts that make up event planning and catering. We sat down with Avah to hear about her experience in her own words.
How did you first learn about the internship with Robert Ryan, and what inspired you to accept the position?
York College of PA requires Hospitality Management students to complete a summer internship each year. While searching for opportunities, I came across Robert Ryan Catering. Eager to secure a position, I reached out, and they quickly responded to set up an interview. The process stood out to me—within just fifteen minutes, I was offered the job and encouraged to start right away. After weighing my options, I ultimately chose Robert Ryan Catering because of the chance to gain hands-on experience in a well-respected catering company.
What did you hope to gain from this internship?
I wanted to experience every aspect of an event—from the very start to the final details. Robert Ryan gave me that opportunity by involving me in every meeting and process possible. I was able to help bring clients’ visions to life, walk them through the planning process, and see firsthand how ideas transformed into finished events. I spent time with every department, gaining insight into each stage of the operation. Throughout the entire summer, I was eager to learn more, and they never once told me I couldn’t be involved.
What was it like working across the different departments during your internship?
Starting in the office was overwhelming at first, but as I learned more about how Robert Ryan executes each step, it became easier to follow. I shadowed the Office Manager, Event Managers, Kitchen Manager, Operations Department, and Day-Of Coordinators during events, all of which provided valuable insight into how each role contributes to a successful event. I was constantly taking notes, asking questions, and seeking to understand the ‘hows’ and ‘whys’ behind each process. Along the way, I was given projects that allowed me to apply what I had learned and further develop my skills.

Can you share a standout experience from your time as an intern?
Working for Robert Ryan showed me how people want to be treated in the workplace—valued, supported, and encouraged every single day. As a summer intern, they treated me like part of the team from the start. Everyone was eager for me to learn and succeed, taking time out of their busy schedules to answer my questions, explain processes, and give me meaningful projects that not only helped me grow but also contributed to their work.
What are some lessons or skills you’ll carry forward?
“One of the most valuable lessons I learned at Robert Ryan is the importance of work-life balance and a supportive workplace. They understood that life happens outside of work and were always flexible and understanding, which built an environment of trust and respect. In the fast-paced hospitality industry, that kind of culture is rare. I also gained skills in problem-solving, adaptability, and staying calm under pressure—qualities I’ll carry with me as I grow in my career and seek out positive, team-focused work environments.”
How has this experience influenced your career goals?
If anything, this experience confirmed that this is where I want to be in my career. I loved seeing the behind-the-scenes work, watching events come together, and observing what sets Robert Ryan apart from other venues. I’ve served and been on the other side of events before, and while I didn’t enjoy that role, I always knew I wanted to be the one planning and ensuring everything runs seamlessly. Experiencing the full process at Robert Ryan showed me exactly how it’s done—and it all just made sense.
Do you have any advice for students considering the program?
Do it! This is an amazing opportunity, and I learned so much in just three months. I’m so glad I chose Robert Ryan—everyone there genuinely wanted me to learn and grow. I was never told I couldn’t see a part of the company. From shadowing every department to sitting in on meetings, they made sure I was involved in as much as possible. I felt valued, supported, and trusted to take on different tasks every day, which helped me build both skills and confidence.
At Robert Ryan Catering & Design, we believe mentorship and hands-on learning are the keys to shaping confident, capable leaders who will carry the hospitality industry forward. Whether it’s in the kitchen, on the event floor, or behind the scenes in planning and operations, these programs allow us to share knowledge, encourage curiosity, and prepare students for rewarding careers.
We’re grateful to Avah and Toby for their contributions this year and look forward to watching their journeys unfold.
