Last year, when a group of my educator colleagues completed the Clifton Strengths inventory, I noticed that nearly all of us had “Learner” among our top strengths. I wasn’t surprised, as many teachers are drawn to the profession because we’re naturally energized by the process of learning. We listen to podcasts on the commute to school, save articles to read later, follow educators online, and take continuing education courses to keep growing our practice. For many of us, the learning itself is part of what keeps our jobs interesting!
But exploring a new idea is only the beginning. Some of the most meaningful professional learning happens afterwards, when we’re chatting with a colleague after dismissal or sharing a takeaway in a team meeting, and get the chance to say, “Here’s what I’m thinking. What do you think?”
Yet during our busy school days, opportunities for deep conversation can feel like a luxury. Our schedules are built around students, instruction, meetings, and urgent to-do’s, leaving little time to pause and talk through new learning. Below, we dig into why these conversations are so valuable when they do happen!
4 Things Educators Gain From Conversation
1. Time to process
Educators take in a lot of information, but there’s a difference between hearing an idea and really making sense of it. Talking with someone else gives us space to clarify our understanding, ask questions, and think about what might work in our own school setting.
2. A fresh perspective
A colleague from another grade level, role, content area, or building may see something we don’t. Those different viewpoints can stretch our thinking and help us imagine possibilities beyond our own classroom or school context.
3. A path from idea to action
Conversation often helps turn “That’s interesting” into “Here’s what I could try tomorrow.” When Teaching Channel led an interactive session at a local school, participants reported leaving with concrete ideas they planned to implement, from more intentional vocabulary instruction to crisis planning, humor, and relationship-building.
4. Connection beyond our usual circle
Participants in that same session repeatedly named conversation and collaboration as the most valuable part of the experience. They appreciated having time to talk with peers, hear from educators in other buildings and roles, and share ideas they could bring back to their teams.
