Adria Arjona Stuns in a Sleek Form-Fitting Black Gown at the ‘Onslaught’ L.A. Premiere

Adria Arjona did not come to the Onslaught premiere in Los Angeles to blend into the step-and-repeat. She came to own it.

The 34-year-old actress arrived at the A24 action thriller’s L.A. bow this week in a floor-length black satin column gown that looked poured on, and the neckline is where the whole thing earns its keep. Instead of a standard strapless sweetheart, the bodice is built around a contrasting nude-toned bustier panel that peeks out from beneath a diagonal fold of black satin, like a corset caught mid-reveal. That asymmetric fold then travels down the torso in one long, unbroken seam, wrapping the waist and hip before disappearing into a hem that pools softly at her feet.

It is a deceptively simple look that is doing an enormous amount of technical work. The satin catches every flash on the carpet, the seaming carves out an hourglass without a single cutout or slit, and from the side (as the photographers were very happy to discover) the gown skims her frame all the way down. The back dips low and bare, which is why she kept turning over her shoulder for that over-the-shoulder glance she has basically trademarked at this point.

Styling stayed deliberately minimal so the dress could talk. Arjona wore her hair slicked into a high, glossy ballerina bun with not a strand out of place, and let a pair of oversized silver starburst earrings do the sparkling. A chunky crystal cluster ring on her right hand was the only other flourish. Makeup was warm and glowy, with a soft bronze wash on the lids, a nude-rose lip, and her freckles left happily on display.

And can we talk about the arms? Arjona is in undeniable superhero shape right now, all sculpted shoulders and toned, camera-ready posture, which feels less like a coincidence than a preview. She plays a former Army sniper in Onslaught, protecting her young daughter from a rogue squad of genetically engineered super soldiers who break loose in the desert, and she has been open that the role required her character to become a weapon herself.

The film comes from You’re Next and The Guest director Adam Wingard, reuniting with co-writer Simon Barrett, and it lands in theaters September 4 alongside Dan Stevens, Rebecca Hall, Drew Starkey, Michael Biehn, Alex Pereira, Reginald VelJohnson and Eric Wareheim. Wingard has said the movie technically shares a town with The Guest, which has genre fans very excited.

Then there is the other thing. Arjona is confirmed for James Gunn’s 2027 Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow, with Deadline and Variety reporting she landed the role of alien warrior queen Maxima while The Hollywood Reporter kept her character listed as a mystery. Naturally, a large and extremely vocal contingent of fans is convinced Maxima is cover for a much bigger cape, and that Arjona is actually the DCU’s new Wonder Woman. She is not helping the speculation either way. Asked about it at Comic-Con this summer, she laughed, said “I’m going to go now,” and walked off. She later told Entertainment Weekly that Gunn and Peter Safran are “family” to her.

Maxima or Diana Prince, the physique is on the record and the red carpet form is undefeated. Look at that gown again. She is already dressing like a woman who knows something we don’t.
