Strava adds physical therapy as dedicated activity type

Strava has announced the addition of Physical Therapy to its platform, allowing athletes to record recovery & rehabilitation sessions alongside traditional activities such as runs, rides, and swims.

The update, which launched recently, recognises injury prevention and recovery as essential components of an active lifestyle. By treating prehabilitation and rehabilitation as intentional, structured training, the platform aims to provide users with a more comprehensive picture of their fitness journey.

Physical therapy joins more than 50 activity types already supported on the app, including yoga, weight training, and pilates. The move follows other recovery-focused features on the platform, such as the Recover Athletics app – which focuses on mobility and resilience – and recovery activity tags used to annotate lighter training days.

Matt Salazar, Chief Product Officer at Strava, said “The balance between activity, recovery and rehabilitation is built into the Strava product, to motivate our users safely. It’s as hard, if not harder, to come back from an injury. With the launch of Physical Therapy, athletes can say ‘I showed up today, I did the work, and I’m still moving forward.’”

He added “Building oneself back from injury is as meaningful of an achievement as setting a new PR.”

According to the company, the inclusion of this activity type is intended to help users build habits and maintain motivation during periods when they may not be able to perform at their peak.

Strava notes that it currently has more than 195 million users across 185 countries. The platform serves as a social network for athletes, allowing for the tracking and sharing of various movement types across its digital ecosystem.
