A traffic ticket might feel like a minor annoyance…until the fine comes due. And some states make that annoyance surprisingly expensive. In 2026, a routine speeding citation can cost hundreds of dollars before a driver even considers what points or higher insurance premiums might do to the household budget.

The tricky part involves more than the number printed on the ticket. States pile on court costs, assessments, per-mile charges, and other penalties in very different ways, so the same 10-mph mistake can produce dramatically different bills depending on where it happens.

1. California

California is perhaps the worst state when it comes to speeding tickets, with a typical 10-mph-over citation ranging from about $285 to $399. The state’s penalty-assessment structure can multiply a relatively modest base fine once mandatory assessments and other charges enter the picture.

The situation gets even more serious in enhanced areas such as school zones, where higher penalties can push a citation past $1,000. That makes California a place where checking the actual total rather than assuming the base fine tells the real story can save a driver from a very unpleasant courthouse surprise.

2. Illinois

Illinois lands near the top because its speeding penalties combine a substantial base fine with court costs that can add considerably to the final bill. A standard 10-mph-over comparison puts the estimated total around $275 to $385.

Drivers also need to pay attention to how far above the limit they travel because Illinois treats more serious speeding violations much differently. Going 26 to 34 mph over the limit can bring a Class B misdemeanor and a maximum fine of $1,500, while 35 mph or more over can reach Class A misdemeanor territory with a maximum fine of $2,500.

3. Texas

Texas may not have the infamous annual Driver Responsibility surcharge anymore, but that does not make every speeding ticket cheap. A 2026 comparison places a 10-mph-over ticket around $270 to $378 after adding typical court costs to the base fine.

The final number can vary because Texas counties handle court costs differently, so a driver should not assume a citation will cost exactly what a friend paid somewhere else. That local variation matters when a supposedly simple ticket starts collecting fees like a diner tab that nobody remembers ordering.

4. Louisiana

Louisiana enters the list with estimated 10-mph-over ticket costs ranging from roughly $260 to $364. The state combines a base fine with additional charges, and its treatment of speeding in school zones can make the financial consequences much steeper.

School-zone violations deserve particular caution because Louisiana can apply a three-times multiplier under specified circumstances. A driver who treats a school-zone speed limit like a casual suggestion can therefore turn an ordinary speeding mistake into a dramatically more expensive problem.

5. Maryland

Maryland uses a per-mile approach that can make speeding costs climb quickly as the alleged speed increases. A 10-mph-over citation falls into an estimated $260 to $364 range in the 2026 comparison, but higher speeds can push the underlying fine upward rapidly.

That structure creates an important budgeting lesson: the difference between being slightly over the limit and being substantially over it matters. Maryland also assigns points for more serious speeding violations, creating another potential cost through a driver’s record and future insurance pricing.

6. Rhode Island

Rhode Island makes the list with an estimated 10-mph-over cost of about $260 to $364. Its combination of a base fine and per-mile charges can make speeding considerably more expensive than drivers might expect from the initial citation alone.

The broader lesson matters for anyone driving across state lines: a familiar driving habit does not guarantee a familiar financial consequence. A road trip can cross several different penalty systems in a single afternoon, so treating posted limits seriously remains considerably cheaper than learning each state’s fee schedule the hard way.

7. Nevada

Nevada ranks seventh, with the 2026 comparison placing a 10-mph-over ticket around $250 to $350. The state uses a per-mile speeding charge alongside court costs, which means the bill can climb as the alleged speed rises.

Nevada also illustrates why the ticket itself should not become the only financial concern. Multiple violations can affect a driver’s record and insurance, and insurers commonly consider driving history when calculating premiums, potentially turning one roadside encounter into a longer-lasting expense.

8. New Jersey

New Jersey rounds out the upper tier with an estimated 10-mph-over ticket cost of roughly $235 to $329. The state’s Motor Vehicle Commission also maintains a separate surcharge system for drivers who accumulate enough points, so the court fine does not necessarily represent the entire financial consequence.

That distinction can catch drivers off guard because the costs can arrive through separate channels. Insurance companies can also raise premiums after certain violations, meaning a ticket can affect the wallet long after the original payment leaves the bank account.

9. North Carolina

North Carolina takes ninth place, with an estimated ticket costing about $250 to $350. Court costs contribute heavily to that total, demonstrating how a low-looking base fine can become a much larger obligation once the rest of the bill arrives.

North Carolina also deserves extra attention from drivers who rack up speed because its reckless-driving rules can create much more serious consequences. In particular, the state’s rules can treat driving 15 mph over the posted limit as reckless driving under specified circumstances, so the financial stakes can change quickly as speed increases.

The Ticket Is Only the Opening Act

A traffic ticket rarely deserves a simple “fine equals cost” calculation. The real financial impact can include the initial penalty, court costs, assessments, points, possible surcharges, and higher insurance premiums, depending on the state and the driver’s circumstances.

That makes one habit especially valuable: check the actual penalty schedule for the jurisdiction where the ticket occurred before paying or making assumptions about the total. A driver should also check how the violation affects the driving record and insurance, because the cheapest-looking ticket can become the expensive one over time.
