How to Propagate Pothos Plants - An Easy Guide

Pothos is an easy plant to propagate from stem cuttings in either soil or water. Water is faster, but soil grows stronger roots. Here’s how to do it.More

Pothos plants can be propagated three ways including stem cuttings either in water or potting mix or soil, and by root division. Water propagation is the fastest way to grow a new Pothos plant, but potting mix and soil result in a stronger and more developed root system from the start.

Although root division is an effective method, you need a mature plant that should already need repotted. Below you’ll find the instructions to propagate photos using all three options.

Stem Cuttings

Propagating Pothos plants through stem cuttings is the easiest way to grow a new Pothos plant. You’ll want to make at least three or four clippings from the vine you choose so you can fill out a pot or hanging basket as your new Pothos plant grows.

One thing that is important when creating Pothos stem cuttings is to always make the vine clipping two nodes from the base of the plant vs. halfway down a vine. If you trim halfway down a vine the Pothos plant will start the growth from the clipped vine vs. focusing on growing the other vines from the pot or hanging basket.

You will need:

  • 1 pair of sharp gardening shears

  • 1 Pothos plant with long vines

  • 1 glass of water or 4” pot

  • Well draining potting mix

Water Propagation

To propagate Pothos with water:

  1. Cut a long vine from your Pothos plant two nodes from the soil line.

  2. Make a clipping above a leaf making sure there are at least 2 to 3 leaves on the clipping and a long enough stem below them to reach the bottom of the glass of water without falling out.

  3. Place the stems into the glass of water for 2 to 3 weeks.

  4. Once roots have formed transfer the clippings into the 4” pot with a well draining potting mix.

Soil Propagation

To propagate Pothos with soil:

  1. Cut a long vine from your Pothos plant two nodes from the soil line.

  2. Make a clipping above a leaf making sure there are at least 2 to 3 leaves on the clipping and a long enough stem below them to reach the bottom of the glass of water without falling out.

  3. Plant the clippings directly into the 4” pot with well draining potting mix and water when the top inch of potting mix gets dry.

Root Division

If you have a mature and grown Pothos plant that needs repotted, root division is a great option for you. It isn’t growing a new plant like the two propagation techniques above, but is diving the current potted plant into two and letting both grow separately.

You will need:

  • Two 4” or greater pots

  • Well draining potting mix

  • A bowl of water or sink you don’t mind getting potting mix in

The steps to do Pothos root division are:

  1. Remove your Pothos plant from its pot

  2. Starting at the bottom, loosen the roots from the potting mix.

  3. With your fingers starting from the bottom to the top, gently pull the two sides (right from left) apart.

    1. Don’t worry about ripping and breaking noises, the roots are more sturdy and durable than you think.

  4. Rinse the current soil off of the current root system to free it up.

  5. Plant each half of the Pothos plants into their new pots that have well draining potting mix.
