Hid Foundation urges Meghalaya government to honour Dr. D. D. Lapang’s legacy

 

Shillong, Oct 25: The Hid Foundation, Shillong, has requested the Government of Meghalaya to consider naming a prominent road in Shillong city as Dr. D. D. Lapang Road and renaming the Science Hall at the DC Office, Nongpoh, as the Dr. D. D. Lapang Memorial Hall.

“This gesture would serve as a fitting tribute to the enduring legacy and selfless contributions of Late Dr. D. D. Lapang towards the growth and development of Meghalaya,” the Foundation said in a statement.

The Foundation said that a stalwart statesman and visionary leader, Dr. Lapang devoted decades of his life to public service—serving the state as Chief Minister five times, Deputy Chief Minister twice, Cabinet Minister ten times, and Leader of the Opposition twice in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.

“A true nationalist and people-centric leader, Dr. Lapang played a pivotal role in shaping the political and social fabric of the state, particularly during the Hill State Movement. His instrumental efforts in the creation of Ri-Bhoi District in 1992 earned him the well-deserved recognition as the Founding Father of Ri-Bhoi,” it said.

The Foundation added that honouring Dr. Lapang’s memory through these dedications would not only acknowledge his invaluable service but also inspire future generations to emulate his unwavering commitment to public service, integrity, and community development.
