In addition to coming out with VR Glasses that improve upon the Apple Vision Pro, Meta also recently announced a new AI hardware device, the Muse Charm, that brings their Muse AI to life as a Tamagotchi like pet. Could this be the form factor that AI needs for mass adoption?

BGR explains what the Muse Charm is all about:

“Following Google’s push towards agentic AI, Meta introduced its own agentic AI assistant, Muse, earlier this month for users in select regions. Users can access the assistant via a dedicated app, on the web, and through WhatsApp. The company presented one additional way users can soon prompt Muse at Meta Connect 2026: using a separate keychain-sized gadget called the Muse Charm.

As Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg showed at Connect, this tiny gadget is a fully functioning AI agent that processes requests over the cloud. Despite its small form factor, Meta claims that a Muse Charm can do everything Muse can do on your other devices. Instead of unlocking their phone and opening the Muse app, users can press the fingerprint sensor on the Muse keychain to start prompting instantly.

The Muse Charm can do everything any other LLM or voice assistant can do, but it can also handle advanced agentic automation, such as taking care of tasks in other apps in the background. We’ve seen the Muse app do things like find and buy products, book tickets, send emails, and more. Additionally, the device features a built-in camera that you can point at things for visual context, such as asking for details about a poster. The main selling point is that it is the quickest way to access Meta’s AI assistant, aside from Meta Glasses.”

Sure, it’s quick access to AI, if you happen to like using Meta’s Muse, but that’s not the only selling point. That would be its cuteness. Fast Company explains why that’s important:

“AI has an image problem, to say the least, with public fears on the rise that the technology could lead to mass unemployment and human extinction. So for its new AI agent Muse and an associated device, Meta is dialing down the fear factor and cranking up the cute. To sell AI hardware to the masses, Meta is going kawaii.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the company’s forthcoming Muse Charm on Wednesday, a handheld device for its new AI agent. It looks like a futuristic Tamagotchi and personifies the chatbot on the screen as a fuzzy, rotund beige mascot. You can name the creature yourself. Instagram’s Adam Mosseri named his “Max.” (Facebook and Instagram introduced their users to the avatar this week to entice downloads of the Muse app.)

…Instead of visualizing its new AI agent as non-anthropromorphic glowing orb, like Siri, or a cursor and text, like ChatGPT, Muse is a cute monster avatar. Meta could have gone down the route of its competitors, but it didn’t. Instead, its choice shows something about how big tech is appealing to softer emotions in the race toward mass adoption.”

OpenAI has been said to been working on a hardware device as well. Has Meta just improved upon their design the way their VR Glasses seemingly improved upon Apple’s Vision Pro? If so, Meta could have just staked a major claim to relevancy in the near future.

Is the Muse Charm the Greatest Idea Ever?
