Honoring the Legacy of Memorial Day

This Memorial Day, we pause to honor and remember the courageous men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Their bravery, dedication, and sacrifice continue to inspire generations and remain deeply woven into the fabric of American history.  Featured above is "The Flying First", a historical title used by the U.S. Air Force to refer to the 1st Reconnaissance Squadron and the 1st Aero Squadron also known as the oldest squadron in American military aviation, that was established in 1913.    More than a century ago, the 1st Aero Squadron became the first U.S. military aviation unit to participate directly in combat operations during General John J. Pershing’s 1916 expedition into Mexico in pursuit of Pancho Villa. Flying fragile Curtiss JN-3 “Jenny” biplanes through harsh desert conditions, pioneering aviators like Capt. Benjamin Foulois helped establish the foundation of American military aviation. From World War I reconnaissance missions over France to Cold War intelligence operations in the legendary SR-71 Blackbird, the squadron evolved alongside the U.S. Air Force itself. Today, known as the 1st Reconnaissance Squadron at Beale Air Force Base, the unit continues its historic mission by training U-2 Dragon Lady and RQ-4 Global Hawk crews, carrying forward a legacy of innovation, reconnaissance, and service that has shaped American airpower for over 100 years.   At Cockpit USA, our heritage has always been rooted in the legacy of military aviation and the enduring spirit of those who served.
