Popular odd jobs apps for your ‘to do’ list

Homeowners are increasingly turning to ‘gig apps’ – online tools that connect independent workers with short-term, flexible jobs or tasks. The most common are grocery deliveries, ridesharing, handyman tasks, and moving jobs. Some of these apps are better than others and here are the ones that have the highest rankings in their specialties.

Task Rabbit – This app has always excelled at small jobs like assembling furniture, hanging pictures, running errands.  Users browse worker profiles and book the one they think would be best for their job.  It rates 4.7 out of 5 stars on mobile app stores.  Users like the transparent pricing, same-day availability, and direct in-app booking. The workers set their own hours and keep the full amount they earn.

Thumbtack -This app is best at larger jobs and jobs that require skilled mid-level professional services.  You can get multiple quotes, and they will vet pros for review for planned projects. Same-day or next-day smaller projects are not their strength.

Angi – They connect you with service pros or provide research into potential projects – like cost guides and quotes.  Better for scheduled work than last minute emergencies.  They lean toward recommending established businesses for doing work rather than the casual odd jobbers. They have high consumer ratings.  Their fee structure requires that users pay for the worker leads even if you don’t win the job.

Nextdoor – This is a shared community resource center, very grass roots. It relies on word of mouth and recommendations by neighbors.  It’s not really a hiring platform, but it is very useful because the information is tried and true local referrals. There is a drawback for the workers in that if the employer reneges on payment there is no safety net.

GigSmart – best for immediate labor, warehouse gigs, and event staffing. It is predictable, hourly-rate shift work.  They do impose small fees that ‘nickel-and-dime the workers.

Airtasker – A newer Australian app that has expanded into the U.S. and U.K. where customers post a task with a specific budget and workers make offers.  It provides flexibility in pricing. There is a 20% commission fee on earnings.

The Complete Odd Job & Gig App Breakdown

App Best For Earning Model Main Worker Complaint
Angi Licensed / Skilled Trades Pay-per-lead: You pay up front just to talk to a client, whether you get hired or not. Potentially wasted money on competitive, unclosed leads.
Thumbtack Growing Local Businesses Pay-per-lead: Similar to Angi, but relies heavily on “Instant Booking” features where you pay for direct client matches. High, unpredictable auto-charging fees for leads that don’t book.
TaskRabbit General Home Maintenance Direct Hire / Flat Hourly: Clients find your profile, and you keep 100% of the hourly rate you set. The algorithmic struggles to get your profile noticed without existing 5-star reviews.
Airtasker Quirky, Casual, or Remote Gigs Open Bidding: You pitch your price on public job postings. The platform takes a steep 20% cut of your earnings. Aggressive price undercutting creates a “race to the bottom.”
Nextdoor Ultra-Local Word of Mouth Organic Hyper-Local: Free neighborhood posting and networking. Clients pay you directly (cash, Venmo, etc.). Zero platform protections or structured contracts if a client refuses to pay.
GigSmart Urgent Daily Shift Work Fixed Hourly Shifts: Instant matching for commercial warehouse, construction, or event labor. Small fee deductions, including a $1.00/hour platform fee taken from your pay.
