It is impossible not to feel a surge of immense national pride. 🇵🇭 They are out there actively championing their respective disciplines, putting Philippine sports firmly on the global map, and inspiring countless young children watching from the sidelines to dream bigger.

They come from different status in life. Some walked paths paved with top-tier training facilities, elite international exposure, and world-class coaching. Others had to scrape, grind, and fight for every single inch just to be noticed on a makeshift field or a local court. Yet, despite their different starting lines, they share a distinct fire. Their relentless determination comes from a pure passion for their sport. But if you look closer at their stories, past the medals and the podium finishes, you will find a common denominator: family.

Their grit, confidence, and ability to show up with all their heart and might exist because they know one unshakeable truth. Whatever happens, their family has their back. There is truly nothing quite like the power of parents showing up for a child chasing a dream.

Honestly, it is only now, being deep in it myself, that I truly understand sports parents. Before this, you see them cheering on the sidelines or driving across town, but I never really grasp the sheer weight of it. There are so many things a sports parent would sacrifice—not just money and time, but most of all, their unwavering commitment.

Three years into this football mom life, I finally get it. There are days I get bone-tired, when the pockets run dry and the mental load feels heavy. But then I look at my son and I snap back, because I know this is what he wants. Without unrelenting parental support, a child’s dream rarely stands a chance.

Just recently, I had to decline two really good opportunities. They were experiences I wanted my son to have. But given the financial strain that would come with it, hindi ko talaga kaya. It’s too soon, ang lapit na masyado, tapos back-to-back pa. Wala tayong maleeta. Maybe next year?

Still, I made a promise. I told him that if the third opportunity came knocking and he got called up to play, I would make sure that he will. And you should have seen his happiness when it finally came. It is an out-of-town tournament, it is for a couple of days, and it certainly is not cheap. Pero ilalaban ng mommy. Because the last thing I ever want to hear is him telling me again how much “he has been missing out on good opportunities” because we just couldn’t make it work. And that really broke me.

This football life can be deeply exhausting—taxing on the wallet, emotionally draining when FOMO creeps in. But as cliché as it may sound, the moment my sleepless self takes the front row seat, watch him run down the pitch and play with every ounce of his heart and might, every single ounce of doubt and weariness gets completely washed away.

In that exact moment, there is no room for exhaustion, only a heart overflowing with pride for my beastboy.
