Texas State University has partnered with Coast Flight Training, the City of San Marcos, and Texas Aviation Partners (TAP) to launch a Bachelor of Applied Arts and Science (BAAS) degree in Aviation Science, addressing the national demand for pilots. Coast Flight Training will provide the flight training at San Marcos Regional Airport, owned by the City of San Marcos and operated by TAP. The program, starting in Fall 2024, aims to equip students with the necessary certifications, licensure, and skills required for professional pilots, fostering industry partnerships and enhancing career opportunities in aviation. Texas State University

Texas State University is launching a degree program through its Department of Occupational, Workforce, and Leadership Studies (OWLS). Coast Flight Training

Coast Flight Training, an FAA-approved flight school, will provide the essential flight training component of the degree at the San Marcos Regional Airport. Coast Flight Training ensures that students receive top-tier, hands-on flight instruction, which is crucial for developing competent and confident pilots. This partnership allows Texas State students to gain real-world flying experience under the guidance of experienced professionals.

Texas Aviation Partners (TAP)

Texas Aviation Partners (TAP) operates the San Marcos Regional Airport, where the flight training will take place. TAP’s role is pivotal in providing a well-maintained, fully equipped facility for training future pilots. The collaboration with TAP not only ensures access to excellent airport facilities but also integrates the university’s academic program with the operational aspects of aviation, offering students a comprehensive educational experience.

Program Goals

The Aviation Science degree program aims to meet the growing demand for airline and commercial pilots. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that during the decade spanning 2022-2032, the demand for commercial pilots will grow nationally by more than 5,600 positions, an increase of more than 4%. About 16,800 openings for commercial pilots are projected each year, on average, over the decade, with many of those openings resulting from the need to replace pilots reaching mandatory retirement.

Texas State University’s program is strategically positioned to fill this gap by producing graduates who are ready to enter the workforce with the necessary credentials and skills.

The partnership between Texas State University, Coast Flight Training, and Texas Aviation Partners is a significant step toward addressing the national pilot shortage. By leveraging the strengths of each partner, the program offers a comprehensive educational pathway for aspiring pilots.
