If you rely on prescription inserts to keep you moving comfortably, you might be wondering how long they actually last. Foot and Ankle Associates of Cleveland takes pride in designing Custom Orthotics that are built to withstand heavy daily use. Still, we also know that even the highest quality medical devices undergo normal wear and tear over time.

If your inserts are no longer providing the exact structural support you need, here are 3 clear indicators that it’s time to have them evaluated (and potentially replaced).

1.) Your Original Foot Pain Has Returned

We prescribe custom inserts to address specific mechanical issues and alleviate pain. If you suddenly start feeling that familiar sting of Plantar Fasciitis in your heel or the ache of Tendonitis in your ankle, it is a warning sign.

If you are experiencing new, unexplained twinges in your knees, hips, or lower back that do not have an obvious athletic cause, your worn-out orthotics may be the culprit!

2.) Visible Signs of Damage and Wear

Take your inserts out of your shoes and inspect them carefully.

  • You are looking for thin spots, cracked plastic, or top covers that are peeling away.
  • Additionally, check the soles of your everyday shoes. If you notice that one side of the shoe sole is wearing down significantly faster than the other, it strongly indicates that your orthotics are no longer correcting your gait effectively.

3.) You Are Developing Skin Bumps or Calluses

Your inserts should fit seamlessly against your foot without shifting.

  • When they get too old, they can flatten out or warp, causing unnatural friction between the device, your shoe, and your skin.
  • If you are suddenly developing painful corns, blisters, or calluses on the bottom or sides of your feet, your inserts are likely rubbing in ways they never did before.

Why a Routine Check Matters

Even if your inserts look fine, your body changes over time. Weight fluctuations, injuries, or new fitness routines can alter your foot structure. A device that perfectly supported your arches four years ago might not be the right fit for your biomechanics today. If you suspect your inserts have reached the end of their lifespan, we can help.
