Tree Planting Day – Rotary Club Canberra ACT

On Friday 31 March Regenerative Landscapes Australia (Senior Ecologist and Director) Justin Hurley Ley joined His Excellency, General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd) and Her Excellency Mrs Linda Hurley, together with the Honourable David Smith MP, Federal Member for Bean, and almost 30 Year 6 school children and teachers from the Evelyn Scott School in Denman Prospect, joined members of the Rotary Club of Canberra Sunrise in planting 96 native trees and shrubs along the Molonglo River in Denman Prospect. The Rotary Club of Canberra Sunrise put out a call for community-minded lovers of nature, who were keen to “green” Denman Prospect along the Molonglo River, and assembled  a small army of Rotary Club members and community volunteers from across Canberra to assist with the tree planting.

Representative of RLA Justin was instrumental in pulling the project together for the Rotary Club along with Senior Rangers form ACT Parks and Conservation Service. RLA Provided site set out, drilling planting holes and technical advice on species selection.

The Denman Prospect school students were extraordinarily enthusiastic with one student kissing each tree that he planted!

The Rotary Club of Canberra Sunrise was successful in gaining a Commonwealth Government Grant of $20,000 as part of the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Tree Planting Program.

Rotary is committed to supporting activities that strengthen the conservation and protection of natural resources, advance ecological sustainability, and foster harmony between communities and the environment.

The Rotary Club of Canberra Sunrise is grateful to the ACT Parks and Conservation Service for their immeasurable assistance with this activity – there is still some planting to be undertaken, and tentative dates have been set for 6/7 May for the final planting activity (please monitor this website for confirmation) – again, volunteers will be welcome.
