Time for block 7 in the Picture Perfect QAL. Quilting rulers can be used in so many ways — it’s always such a treat when a new pattern comes together. Today we’re working with the Squiggy ruler.

Picture Perfect QAL

The Picture Perfect QAL is a Sugaridoo x BERNINA quilt along. Every few weeks you’ll find new instructions here on the BERNINA blog, so you can keep working on your project.

We started by sewing the quilt top. After that, we quilt one block every two weeks. Here’s the schedule for the QAL:

The Squiggy ruler

Today we’re working with the Squiggy ruler. This ruler has two waves: a small one and a large one. The pattern we’re making today uses the small wave, but you can scale it up by using the large wave instead.

Quilting block 7

Today’s pattern is not the simplest, but the effect it creates is so much fun. By mirroring the wave on both sides of a line and repeating it with a slight offset, you get a kind of retro pattern.

Today we’re tackling the seventh block of the quilt. Below you’ll find a new video with the Squiggy ruler, followed by photos and illustrations so you can go through it at your own pace. Happy quilting!

Illustrations

In the illustrations you’ll see three colors of lines:

Gray: the markings
Pink: the lines being quilted in that step
Black: the lines quilted in previous steps

Markings for block 7

Take your time to make the right markings for this block. The vertical markings are spaced 1 inch apart.

For the horizontal markings, start by drawing a line 3/4 inch from the bottom. The second horizontal marking goes 2 inches above that line. Then add another line 3/4 inch above that, and continue alternating until you reach the top.

Grab your Squiggy ruler and let’s get started. We quilt everything along the bottom, the small side of the ruler.

Start with your needle in the lower left corner. If your markings are placed correctly, you’ll see that the first wave stops at the 4th horizontal marking from the bottom.

Move the ruler and quilt the next partial wave upward.

Now quilt a short section over the seam at the top toward the left. Position the ruler so that when you quilt, you end up at the first marking from the top, as shown in the photo below.

Quilt this section of the wave and then move the ruler. You should again be moving from horizontal marking to horizontal marking.

That completes our first double wave line.

Now move to the 3rd vertical marking, where we’ll create our second double wave line.

Start by positioning the ruler so that your wave ends at the 2nd horizontal line from the bottom.

After moving the ruler, you’ll end up at the top of your block.

Now quilt a second wave back down. Be sure to watch the video to see how to position the ruler at each step.

The illustration below shows what you’re aiming for. The two new waves fit neatly into the spaces left by the first waves you already made.

From here, continue quilting double wave lines. First quilt it mirrored on the other side of the 3rd vertical marking.

Then add another double wave form at the 6th vertical marking.

Finally, fill the space on the right side with a partial wave.

And there it is! Block 7 quilted with the Squiggy ruler. Good luck with this slightly more challenging pattern. Mistakes happen, and that’s completely fine — it’s all part of learning something new. Take your time!
