  Over the last year, we’ve received a number of AI generated tattoo references brought in by our clients occasionally followed by an apology as if they offended us. The first thing we tell them is to never apologize. The reality is, like the rest of the world, AI has introduced itself to tattooing and despite the initial resistance and mixed reviews from tattooers, it would be short-sighted to ignore.Where problems arise is when AI-generated images are treated as finished tattoo designs rather than conceptual artwork. More often than not, clients become attached to their AI designs because it incorporates "everything" they envisioned. However, a reputable artist would (should) never reproduce an AI-generated design outright for two main reasons.Tattooing has always been rooted in originality and creativity. Copying an AI-generated image bypasses the creative process and overlooks the artist's responsibility to create something both technically sound and unique to the client.Beyond the traditional values of tattooing, there's also a technical reality. AI creates unrealistic expectations of what is actually possible on skin. It prioritizes visual complexity over long-term legibility and doesn't account for anatomy, muscle structure, body movement, healing, or how tattoos naturally age. The result is often impossible colour saturation, excessively fine details, and linework that simply won't hold up over time. A design that looks impressive on a screen won't always translate into a successful tattoo. A tattoo artist's role is to interpret the concept, refine it for the body, and guide clients toward a design that will not only look great when it's fresh, but remain strong and readable for years to come. That said, we’d be lying to ourselves if we said AI isn’t helpful. Whether we’d like to admit it, there are several benefits to using AI during the research phase. When used responsibly, AI can be an effective tool like any other software/resource such as Photoshop and Google. It’s efficient, accessible and a powerful tool to help communicate themes and transform ideas into visual compositions. However, if used, it should be used with caution and realistic expectations and more importantly, never an attempt at the final design rendering. When researching tattoo artists, it's important to remember that every piece in an artist's portfolio began with a person and not a prompt. Each tattoo was developed through conversation, collaboration, and years of technical experience. When choosing an artist, focus less on finding someone who can replicate a specific image and more on finding someone whose body of work consistently demonstrates the style, craftsmanship, and technical understanding you're looking for. The best tattoos are rarely the result of copying a finished concept but instead, the result of trusting an experienced artist to create something that is designed specifically for you.
