Why Rising Mortgage Debt Doesn’t Signal a Housing Market Crash/
You may have seen headlines saying mortgage debt in the U.S. has reached a record high. While that's true, there's a much bigger part of the story that often gets overlooked. Homeowner equity is also near record levels—totaling more than $34 trillion, far exceeding the amount of mortgage debt outstanding. That means many homeowners have built substantial wealth through homeownership and have a strong financial cushion. Unlike the housing crisis of 2008, when many owners owed more than their homes were worth, today's homeowners are in a much stronger position. The housing market may not be perfect, but the data shows it's built on a much more solid foundation than the headlines suggest.
