Kawhi Leonard Raptors return makes one of the NBA’s most memorable short-term partnerships relevant again, seven years after Leonard led Toronto to its first championship and then left for Los Angeles.
The Raptors officially reacquired Leonard from the LA Clippers in a deal finalized after an NBA investigation delayed the trade. Toronto sent Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two future first-round picks, a first-round pick swap and two second-round picks to Los Angeles. Leonard returns after a 2025-26 season in which he averaged a career-high 27.9 points.

Toronto is betting on a familiar closer
The Raptors improved sharply last season, but their next step was always going to depend on how they performed against the best teams in the Eastern Conference. Leonard gives them something few rosters can manufacture easily: a proven half-court scorer who can create a shot late in a game without needing a complicated action.
That matters in the playoffs, where transition opportunities become harder to find and defenses can spend an entire series attacking the same weakness. Toronto already has size, defensive versatility and a young centerpiece in Scottie Barnes. Leonard adds experience and another player who can handle difficult possessions when the game slows down.
His return also changes the way opponents can defend Barnes. Instead of loading multiple defenders toward Barnes on every important possession, teams must account for Leonard’s midrange scoring, strength and ability to punish switches. That does not guarantee Toronto will reproduce 2019, but it gives the offense a different shape.
The price shows how serious the Raptors are
Toronto did not bring Leonard back cheaply. Ingram is a proven scorer, Dick remains a young perimeter player with upside, and the draft compensation stretches years into the future. The move therefore signals that the Raptors believe their current roster is close enough to contention to justify sacrificing flexibility.

The Raptors also have a clearer defensive identity than many teams attempting a win-now move. According to NBA analysis, Toronto ranked fifth defensively last season. Pairing Leonard with Barnes and other switchable defenders could make that strength even more difficult to attack.
The reunion carries more emotion than a normal trade
Leonard’s first Toronto season became one of the defining chapters in franchise history. The Raptors had never won an NBA title before 2019, and his playoff run included the famous Game 7 shot against Philadelphia before Toronto eventually defeated Golden State in the Finals.

The emotional connection will create excitement, but Toronto still has to evaluate this version of Leonard on present-day terms. The 2026-27 Raptors are not the 2019 team, and Leonard is no longer 27. The useful comparison is not whether history can repeat exactly. It is whether his current skill set fits what Toronto lacks now.
There is also the context of the NBA investigation that delayed the transaction. The league penalized the Clippers after finding salary-cap violations connected to off-court payments involving Leonard. Toronto had placed the trade on hold while that process played out before completing the deal.
Reuters reported that the completed trade sends Leonard back to the franchise he led to the 2019 championship, while Los Angeles receives Ingram, Dick and a substantial package of draft assets.
For Toronto, the basketball logic is easy to understand even if the long-term risk is significant. The Raptors had already improved, they needed another dependable scorer against elite defenses, and they had a chance to bring back a player who has already shown he can thrive beside the franchise’s identity. Whether the reunion becomes another championship story will depend on health, chemistry and playoff execution, but the move immediately gives Toronto a more serious place in the Eastern Conference conversation.
