How To Stay Motivated When Training

It can be hard to stay motivated when training for a lot of reasons. Today, I want to share with you the secret to staying motivated and one extra tip to stay consistent. At Trailside Fitness, I specialize in training hikers preparing for various adventures, from the Pacific Crest Trail to weekend excursions. Regardless of the trek, all my clients share one essential element: a specific goal. Here’s why it matters.

The Importance of Having a Goal

Without a clear objective or goal, your workouts lack direction. This makes consistency challenging and results subpar. You might find yourself jumping between programs or constantly starting and stopping program. All of this starting and stopping ultimately stalls your progress and wastes valuable training time. It would help if you had something to strive for to succeed—a target that keeps you focused and driven.

Having a goal transforms your mindset and approach to training. Goals provide intrinsic motivation, a powerful inner force that drives you want to workout, to want to succeed.. Goals become even more powerful when paired with a timeline, keeping you accountable and consistent in your efforts.

Adapting to New Challenges

Completing a goal doesn’t mark the end of your fitness journey; it’s merely a checkpoint. Afterward, it’s crucial to set new objectives to maintain momentum. Whether it’s a different trail or a fresh fitness challenge, continually striving for something keeps your workouts engaging and purposeful.

Goals Keep You Motivated

Reflecting on my fitness journey, I realized the significance of setting goals. While CrossFit provided me with a supportive community, I didn’t have a specific target to train for. Sure, I was consistent each week with workouts and I was making progress. But without a clear goal, I undoubtedly wasn’t workout out at my full ability and intensity all of the time. Transitioning to solo training for the Pacific Northwest Trail required me to set clear goals, which helped me stay motivated and focused.

Consider what drives you—a significant life event, a physical challenge, or a personal milestone. Whether it’s a wedding, a hiking expedition, or a fitness event, having something to work towards adds purpose to your training. Here’s the trick, it has to be something meaningful to you.

Harnessing the Power of Goal Setting To Stay Motivated

To maximize your training, embrace a goal-setting mindset. I use a simple yet effective goal setting process with my clients. We focus on outcome and process goals which help track progress and provide incentive along the way.

Remember, fitness is a journey, not a destination. Setbacks may occur, but you can overcome them with clear goals in place. So, find your motivation, set your goals, and see if that helps keep you stay consistent.

Happy trails!
